چکیده

The intersection of theatre-performance, design, and informatics is a fertile area for a broader understanding of the possible design and interaction between people and avatars in simulated three dimensional information spaces. This paper outlines the theoretical modelling for the visualization of a generic avatar template applicable to information spaces. Such a representation, it is theorised, would indicate semantic and structural meanings between contents of a document collection of an information space to a person. The depiction would be mapped to the visualization engine and represented in a threedimensional information space. Avatars require some artificial intelligence, (AI), which indicates knowledge about the structure and contents of the underlying information, if they are to aide the user in tasks related to the information system. This paper proposes that such knowledge will be represented in the geometry and structure of the avatar visualised at the interface. In this manner, the design and form of the avatar functions as a content analysis tool representing interaction between users and an information space. The grouping of such representations would lend the added benefit of a history of notational avatars tracing the user’s path in an information space over set duration. Using object orientated programming, variables are attached to the body, in this case, the avatar. Depending upon the user’s interaction with the hypermedia system different patterns will

Transformed Social Interaction: Exploring the Digital Plasticity of Avatars

What does it mean to be you? How drastically can a person change and still remain, in the eyes of either themselves or their peers, the same person? Until recently, these questions were typically asked in the context of philosophy, psychoanalysis, or science fiction. However, the increasingly common use of avatars during computer-mediated communication, collaborative virtual environments (CVEs)...

Spontaneous Avatar Behavior for Human Territoriality

The challenge of making a virtual world believable includes a requirement for AI entities which autonomously react to a dynamic environment. After the breakthroughs in believability introduced by modern lightning and physics techniques, the focus is shifting to better AI behavior sophistication. Avatars and agents in a realistic virtual environment must exhibit a certain degree of presence and ...

Analysing emotional interaction through avatars. A generic architecture

This study proposes the use of avatars to generate nonverbal communication in a multimodal interactive system, mainly based on the affective or emotional aspects of this type of communication. The objective of this study is the use of avatars as an element for generating non-verbal communication, without taking a specific application in account, but rather analysing all their interaction possib...

Identifying with an Avatar: A Multidisciplinary Perspective

Avatars perform a complex range of inter-related functions. They not only allow us to express a digital identity, they facilitate the expression of physical motility and, through non-verbal expression, help to mediate social interaction in networked environments. When well designed, they can contribute to a sense of “presence” (a sense of being there) and a sense of “co-presence” (a sense of be...

The Influence of the Avatar on Online Perceptions of Anthropomorphism, Androgyny, Credibility, Homophily, and Attraction

It has become increasingly common for websites and computer media to provide computer generated visual images, called avatars, to represent users and bots during online interactions. In this study, participants (N=255) evaluated a series of avatars in a static context in terms of their androgyny, anthropomorphism, credibility, homophily, attraction, and the likelihood they would choose them dur...
